INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK

Well and Good is an independent art service organization based in Toronto. Established in 2007, we’re two people passionate about the potential of art to engage people and enrich lives. As a cultural agency, we take part in all parts of the creative chain to embrace a dynamic centre from which to move rather than a static position. Well and Good is equal part creator, manufacturer, producer, distributor and supporter of contemporary art. Particularly art from the margins like graffiti and street art.

Our work over the years speaks to this and we are constantly making the most of the opportunities that present themselves. We’ve created short-term art hubs and social experiments like 52 McCaul, curated and produced exhibitions, directed and produced a documentary, engaged in public space advocacy and mural production all while working directly with artists to develop and manage their careers. As a result, we’ve had the great pleasure of working with some of the world’s finest talents.

When Transmitter Studios approached us to work on a book, we saw the potential to serve our mandate by creating a showcase that is part resource and part prediction for our community and the year ahead. To us community isn’t bound by geography, it’s about values. We admire and have worked with many artists and organizations and a pattern emerged of those who were especially driven in pushing themselves and inspiring those around them.

Conversations have always played an important part in how we have built relationships between art and new audiences. We take pride in providing a personal introduction to the artists and their process, so it seemed natural that we’d take this approach to the book. It made more sense to let them tell you in their own words – where they’ve been, where they’re heading and what they see on the horizon. The results are an honest view into the life and hopes of an amazing group of people sharing their gifts with the world.

We hope this book puts a face to the name of some of the people we think that you need to know about. They’re doing Well and Good. It may not be a complete listing but it is a place to start.

Hello Friends and Collaborators,

After some time away, we have decided to bring our project and social experiment at 52 McCaul to a close. What was meant to be a 2 month experiment, touched our (he)arts and culture community and sparked a 7 month run. While we loved having you all as guests and are sad to have to depart, it is the nature of all projects to come to an end.

We are excited to re-focus our attention (away from leaky buildings and unnecessary expenses) to Well and Good’s ongoing efforts to bring greater support and wellness to the community. We look forward to welcoming you again and again in venues and neighbourhoods throughout the city and country.

Join us to celebrate this milestone at 52 McCaul Street this Saturday August 7th for the extravaganza LOVE ME TENDER: A celebration of eclectic music and art! The event will begin at noon and run until 1 am.

What makes this event so special, other than closing out our run on McCaul Street, is that we will be featuring an innovative way for savvy art lovers and budding collectors to buy original artwork at a fraction of the price.

It’s a terribly exciting moment when you purchase a piece of original art and we encourage everyone to try it. And with Love Me Tender we’re making it easier than ever.

HOW IT WORKS is that you buy a “tender” for a chance to win the art you desire. The tender is a ticket, like a raffle ticket. Each piece of art has a limited number of tenders attached to it to be sold so that the odds remain high that your tender will win.

What’s more important is that each tender is like a share in Well and Good and the artist who created it. A portion of every tender goes toward what we do as an organization producing presenting art and culture we believe in (more on that below) but the biggest chunk of it goes to the artist. These tenders mean that the artist can earn market value from their work, grow their audience and survive a little longer to evolve creatively. But we need the whole community to help support by investing and spreading the word to fellow art lovers & culture supporters.

Want to know where your contribution goes?

The Well and Good proceeds of each tender and all donations will go towards:

1. Brighten the Corners: The new mural campaign we’ve created! In partnership with Toronto charity C.A.V.E. (Communities Advancing Valued Environments), our objective is to bring more public art to your community.

2. Well and Good Membership Program launching September 2010: A comprehensive health benefits package, with discounts for yoga, meditation and various workshops plus one on one strategic consulting for artists and patrons. More info email info@wellandgood.ca

3. Pay down debt: As 52 McCaul extended its original run from 2 to 7 months, we incurred costs to facilitate the amazing programming that we were honoured to host. Thanks to the generosity and patience of our supporters, we’ve been able to have flexible repayment terms but we would like to reconcile those as we take new steps forward.

We have decided to close 52 McCaul to the public for the month of July in order to take a break, heal our exhausted bodies and minds.

Since we opened in November we have worked tirelessly every day and at great expense to extend our Well and Good mandate and provide a space where lovers of contemporary art and culture, locally and internationally, could congregate, share and grow.

We are proud of the work we have done and how quickly we have grown to be a valued part of your lives and the community. However, it has been with difficulty that we maintain it, staff it and keep the balance between creating original programming and staying true to our goals when we are entirely independently funded and without support. Its been a grind that has affected our well being.

What you need to know is that we are as committed as we’ve ever been to you and creating valued environments where creativity of all types-not just visual art- can be celebrated. Please bear with us in the coming days while we focus on how we can best deliver you our services moving forward.
